Following the screening, the theater will be transformed into our own private bar, where we get to choose the tunes we want to hear and we get to jump up in front of the screen and air guitar our asses off. There will be blood, yes, but there will also be sweat, tears, smoke, lights, and very possibly confetti and pyro! Spontaneous air bands will be formed. Lifelong friendships will be forged. Old videos you haven’t seen in years will be projected on the movie screen. It’s like karaoke on steroids. Scratch that: It’s like an Elmo crystal-meth sex party. But better.

It’s a U.K.-produced crime caper that’s neither funny nor thrilling, and it is frustratingly, singlemindedly bent on cheap thrills and faux-clever dialogue and situations that are so contrived and hackneyed that Troy Duffy probably threw them out while making Boondock Saints II:All Saints Day.

Last year was a great one for movies with big themes and stunning cinematography. No two movies from 2012 encapsulate both of these traits better than Life of Pi and The Master, and both are now out to own on Blu-ray.

The ability of an actor to transform for a role is one of the most important aspects in making a film not just good – but memorable. What really impresses me is when they take on a role that I wouldn’t consider just challenging – but maybe a bit frightening. These are the kind of roles you don’t want to lose yourself in – because it would be dangerous.

Cyril is an 11-year-old boy who refuses to believe that his father has just up and left him, even going so far as selling his sole possession — the bicycle his father gave him. An active camera darts around, projecting Cyril’s kinetic energy and his unwillingness to be contained, until he’s exactly where he wants to be.

Since Hoult and Tomlinson don’t generate much heat and the story has zero surprises, there’s not any reason to stay invested in this dull fairy tale re-imagining. The film suffers from timing, I suppose, being the most recent in this lame fairy-tale update trend, which seems to exist only to let Hollywood’s VFX artists loose on properties that are immediately familiar to a global audience.
