Yes, three and a half weeks on, and the 39th annual Seattle International Film Festival is finally in the books. Frequent visitors to Scene-Stealers these last couple of weeks likely noticed a slew of reviews for films playing at the festival, and might have been even more surprised to see so many positive remarks, yet the evidence bore it out: this was one hell of a year for cinema at SIFF!

Sometimes you come across a film so bizarre, that, while providing a wholly unique experience, often leaves what’s inside your skull a muddled puddle of goo. I like to think I have a handle on many films – even if I don’t get every reference or deeper symbolism. Yet every so often, I’m left a bit slack-jawed and dazed.

A celebration of the most ludicrous, impractical, destructive, ineffective military organizations in movie history. While some of the films featured were pretty decent, and others were decidedly not, they all had one thing in common: they featured an armed collective so laughably inept that they stood out amongst even the most impractical government organizations.

These face-melting movie scenes count as some of the first real glimpses many of us had for gore. Despite the fact that you now see on prime-time television scientifically correct images of what happens when a body is rent asunder by an number of accidental causes, there’s something to be said for the cartoonish, yet horrendous manner in which a face just drips right away.

The ability of an actor to transform for a role is one of the most important aspects in making a film not just good – but memorable. What really impresses me is when they take on a role that I wouldn’t consider just challenging – but maybe a bit frightening. These are the kind of roles you don’t want to lose yourself in – because it would be dangerous.

Some honorable mentions that didn’t quite clear the quality bar included Holes, The Indian in the Cupboard, Watership Down, Stuart Little, Where the Red Fern Grows, Little Red Riding Hood, Bridge to Terabithia, Winnie the Pooh (2011), Horton Hears a Who, Coraline, Curious George (2006), How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Charlotte’s Web, and Hook (Peter Pan deserves better).
