I remember as a kid, my parents would take me to the Kansas Cosmosphere. For anybody who doesn’t know what that is, think of a Smithsonian in the middle of Kansas dedicated to aviation and space exploration. Honestly, one of the most unique and intriguing museums in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, the one thing I have ever purchased from a gift shop there was a Blue Angels replica. Somewhere in my parents house is still that airplane that I knew nothing about, and yet the intrigue from my parents was enough for me to purchase. I love that finally, I now know more about this iconic air troupe through the power of a new documentary, The Blue Angels.
Directed by Paul Crowder and produced by the likes of J.J. Abrams and Glen Powell, the film gives an exploration of the highs and lows of what it takes to fly with this exclusive group. I had no idea how the entire process worked, let alone that The Blue Angels are a part of the United States Navy. Seriously, after Top Gun: Maverick made a boatload of money at the box office, it’s no surprise that there would be more documentaries about naval aviation. I think that’s where Glen Powell comes in, as one of the stars of that film. In this documentary, we follow the squad as they begin to transition to a new boss who will be in charge of leading the planes during their aviation shows across the country.
One of the most eye popping things about The Blue Angels is its impressive camera work. The camera is placed on the ground to view from above, but more so in the cockpit of the airplanes in order for us to experience what it would be like to be a pilot. I am sad I didn’t see this in IMAX because a large format screen would have done this some major justice.
Overall, The Blue Angels opens up to its audience who might only be familiar with the air shows. Next time they make their way to Kansas City, I think I am a lot more interested in finding out how to get tickets to view this aviation spectacle!.
