Kansas City FilmFest 2013 starts tomorrow at the Alamo Drafthouse Mainstreet , and here’s a review of one of the festival’s films, a romcom called ‘One Small Hitch.’

The Social Media Club of Kansas City is co-sponsoring a screening of Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony on Thursday, April 11 at 7:15pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Mainstreet. Immediately following the movie, I’ll be hosting a Q&A with producer Michael Brockhoff and executive producer John de Lancie, who is also the voice of Discord, the cartoon’s “wily villain” (as well as Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation and hordes of other character-actor roles).

“What a terrible idea.” That’s all I could think when I first heard they were remaking The Evil Dead. Once the credits started rolling however, a completely different phrase was in my mind: blood poetry.

This week, Eric recounts his junket screening of Evil Dead after lamenting that he has sold out once and for all. Trevan discusses The Sapphires, a frustrating, inspired-by-a-true story whose real world story is more interesting than the fictionalized vehicle the studio cooked up. Finally, Trey and Trevan both discuss Ginger and Rosa, a fantastic film by Sally Potter.

‘The Host’ could have been an exploration of internal conflict, or a mystery that questions whether Melanie still exists in this body that once belonged to her. Unfortunately all is explained from the moment the movie begins, and we are left to trod the cinematic desert without a drop of tension to sustain us.

I can with a straight-face and complete seriousness say that ‘Spring Breakers’ is Harmony Korine’s most mature film, and the craft and control that Korine exerts on his medium is incredible.

It’s a U.K.-produced crime caper that’s neither funny nor thrilling, and it is frustratingly, singlemindedly bent on cheap thrills and faux-clever dialogue and situations that are so contrived and hackneyed that Troy Duffy probably threw them out while making Boondock Saints II:All Saints Day.
